Dear Mr. Hoover:

You would have to pay me money to get me to read an article
at this time of the year. However, I did find the reference to my
own opinions, and it is correct, except possibly for the word "concede".
I have always felt that AI had a long way to go to achieve interesting
general intelligence, and recent achievements have been insufficient
to change this opinion.

One comment on the last page. I agree that if human intelligence
can be achieved, there is no barrier to going beyond it. However,
the motivational structure of a computer program is just what it
is programmed to have. Therefore, it is misleading to ask %2"would
it also then choose to make itself increasingly smarter ..."%1. It
would do so if it was so programmed or if that was generated as a
subgoal of some other goal. Naturally people would be inclined to
program it to make itself smarter.
